A camouflaged XPENG MONA L03 was recently seen testing its VLA 2.0 intelligent driving system in Munich ahead of its European launch this week. The vehicle blends well into European roads and attracted local attention. XPENG is advancing its intelligent driving system shortly after new EU regulations take effect, wasting no time in accumulating test miles.
First Impressions and Global Context
I previously saw a prototype of this vehicle in Guangzhou last year, where it also drew crowds. Following the pre-sale launch in China, the MONA L03 appears poised to be a fierce competitor in the sweet spot of the global EV market. Several YouTube channels have shared early test drives from China, generally positive, noting its suitability for the young target audience. However, tweaks and a rumored AWD version may arrive for Europe.
Intelligent Driving Performance
While it looks good on screens and spec sheets, execution is key. I was impressed with the XPENG intelligent driving system during a test in Beijing last April. It outperformed my vision in low light, felt safe, and was remarkably smooth and humanlike. Friends who drove it recently report further improvements.
European Adaptation
Driving in Germany is more rules-based and faster, whereas driving in China can be abstract. It will be interesting to see how the VLA 2.0 system handles Germany, as well as Southern European cities like Athens with more scooters and fewer rules. I will attend the launch in Munich and evaluate details, finishes, materials, and how different surfaces feel. At 6’ tall, I’ll test front and rear fit—the car targets young people (a larger demographic in China), but I’ll see its appeal to Western buyers.
Bold Global Strategy
XPENG is taking a bold step by launching the MONA L03 globally and bringing its intelligent driving system to world markets once newly approved regulations take effect at year-end. Other Chinese automakers have held back, exporting older models without latest tech. XPENG is bringing its best technology worldwide, offering a potentially disruptive alternative to established competitors and more cautious Chinese brands.
