But emerging research reveals a dangerous link: microplastic particles in the environment are colonized by bacteria, and these bacteria develop antibiotic resistance at an unprecedented rate. AMR now accounts for around 4.95 million deaths globally in 2019, with around 1.27 million directly attributable to drug-resistant infections. Tim Walsh, a professor at the University of Oxford and director of biology at the U.K.&#8217;s Ineos Oxford Institute, warns: &#8216;AMR is an existential human threat. It will kill more people [each year] than TB, HIV and malaria, and if unchallenged could eclipse cancer as the biggest killer.&#8217;<\/p>\n<h3>Microplastics Amplify Resistance in Laboratory Studies<\/h3>\n<p>In 2025, researchers at Boston University found that <em>Escherichia coli<\/em> bacteria exposed to microplastics developed 100 times greater tolerance to four common antibiotics after just 10 days. Neila Gross, the doctoral researcher who led the study, says the bacteria&#8217;s tolerance &#8216;just shot up&#8217; to 100 times the starting level. &#8216;This was very, very concerning,&#8217; she adds.<\/p>\n<h2>How Microplastics Amplify Resistance<\/h2>\n<p>Microplastics promote the formation of biofilms\u2014dense communities of bacteria that stick together on surfaces. These biofilms secrete a protective gel that acts as armor against antibiotics. Bacteria in biofilms are 10 to 1000 times more resistant than solitary bacteria. Gross&#8217;s research showed that bacteria form denser, thicker biofilms on microplastic beads than on glass. The microplastics also appear to select for bacteria that are more drug-resistant. Separate studies in China and the U.K. found that in river environments, microplastic waste harbors up to 3 times more antibiotic-resistant bacteria and higher abundance of resistance genes compared to natural surfaces like wood or rock.<\/p>\n<h3>Gene Sharing Accelerated by Plastics<\/h3>\n<p>Biofilm bacteria readily exchange resistance genes through horizontal gene transfer. Walsh and colleagues discovered that microplastics increase this gene transfer by up to 200 times. Bacteria respond to microplastics by activating &#8216;S.O.S. genes&#8217; that repair damaged DNA and stimulate genetic exchange. Certain plastics pose higher risks: polyethylene harbors 3 times more resistant bacteria than polyvinyl chloride, while expanded polystyrene (used in packing peanuts) has a porous structure that increases surface area for colonization.<\/p>\n<h2>Hotspots and Global Inequities<\/h2>\n<p>Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are critical AMR hotspots. Advanced WWTPs can remove up to 99% of microplastics, antibiotics, and drug-resistance genes, but not completely. Tam Tran, senior researcher at NORCE, found that treated effluent still contains traces of these contaminants, creating new hotspots when released into rivers and oceans. In low- and middle-income countries lacking sanitation, multidrug-resistant infections are prevalent and often fatal. Plastic waste is also rampant in these nations, expanding the &#8216;plastisphere&#8217; where resistant bacteria thrive. Climate change further exacerbates the crisis: higher temperatures increase bacterial growth and cause plastics to degrade more rapidly, releasing chemicals that trigger the S.O.S. response.<\/p>\n<h3>Life Cycle of Plastics and Future Actions<\/h3>\n<p>Plastics influence AMR throughout their entire life cycle\u2014from extraction to disposal. Biocides used in oil pipes can select for resistant bacteria, and even recycling may promote resistance if disinfectants fail to kill all microbes. Emily Stevenson, a Ph.D. researcher at the University of Exeter, emphasizes: &#8216;Plastics and AMR are fundamentally linked. At every stage of the life cycle of plastics, from production to disposal, there is something that could influence antimicrobial resistance.&#8217; Experts call for immediate action: reducing plastic and antibiotic inputs into wastewater, improving waste management, and conducting ongoing AMR surveillance. As Stevenson notes, &#8216;We really need to make sure we&#8217;re not just regulating one of those contaminants.
