Authorities in Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh have launched a major relocation effort after landslides killed at least 13 refugees over several days. The deadliest incident occurred Wednesday, July 8, 2026, when a monsoon-triggered landslide swept through an Islamic school in Cox’s Bazar, killing at least five children. In response, officials used loudspeakers, volunteers, and community leaders to move people from high-risk areas to safety on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Begum Jahan, a Quran teacher at the school, described the chaotic scene: “Those of us who were on the western side managed to get out, but everyone on the eastern side was buried under the debris.” She added that some girls suffered broken arms and others lost their lives. The school was preparing for lessons when part of the building collapsed. Local residents began rescue operations before emergency services arrived, according to Dollar Tripura, head of the local fire service and civil defense.
