Volkswagen is in trouble. According to reports, CEO Oliver Blume floated an idea to close four factories and eliminate 100,000 workers by 2030. The plan, known internally as the Group Target Picture, would effectively transform Volkswagen AG into a new company, Manager Magazin said. It would eliminate about one seventh of the group\u2019s global workforce, open the company further to capital markets, and significantly reduce employee influence. The plan was presented at a board meeting on July 9, 2026, and afterwards the company announced a comprehensive package of 12 initiatives and a 2030 target picture. The sense of panic is fueled by a decline in Volkswagen\u2019s fortunes in China. Once a profit powerhouse, sales in China have cratered in the past few years. In the first quarter of 2026, sales in China plunged by 20 percent, meaning the company can no longer paper over losses in its home market with Chinese profits.<\/p>\n
One of the German plants that may cease operations is in Neckarsulm, which assembles Audi models. Locals told the New York Times that closing that factory would devastate the local economy. Already, far right and far left political parties have protested. Members of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany passed out fliers urging workers to participate in a pre-emptive strike. Local resident Harry Leinm\u00fcller said: \u201cThere are so many young people here; some have bought building plots in the countryside. Many won\u2019t be able to pay for their houses anymore. The Chinese are faster than us and have more knowhow.\u201d Mayor Steffen Hertwig said a plant closure would be \u201cfatal\u201d for the area but insisted the factory would not close because it is too innovative. However, according to Manager Magazin, the factory will continue building current models, but successors will be built elsewhere. An employee said: \u201cIf Audi dies, everything here dies.\u201d<\/p>\n
Volkswagen has several brands that offer very similar models, increasing manufacturing complexity and costs. The New York Times notes that GM discontinued Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Saturn; Chrysler eliminated Plymouth; and Ford put Mercury in mothballs to control costs. Volkswagen could do something similar. Yet rumors persist that Volkswagen is considering importing the Cupra brand to America and moving forward with a new Scout division for rugged off-road vehicles. To justify the change, Volkswagen cited geopolitical tensions, rising costs from tariffs, increasing regulatory requirements, and growing competition.
