Global Energy Supply Growth in 2025<\/h2>\n

According to the 75th edition of the Statistical Review of World Energy, total energy supply (TES) exceeded 600EJ in 2025, a rise of 1.7% over 2024. Renewables were the largest source of TES growth for the first time outside of a recession, with solar power accounting for 71% of this increase. However, fossil fuels continued to expand in absolute terms, retaining their dominant position at 86% of TES. As a result, CO2 emissions grew by 1.1%.<\/p>\n

Fossil Fuels and Emissions<\/h3>\n

Despite renewables growth, fossil fuel supply increased. Europe’s CO2 emissions from the energy sector rose 0.5%, China’s emissions also increased, but the USA’s emissions rose four times more than China’s. US coal consumption grew by 10%, while China’s coal consumption was flat year over year and India’s coal consumption grew by only 0.6% (far below its 10-year average of 3.6%).<\/p>\n

Solar Surpasses Wind in Power Generation<\/h2>\n

Solar achieved 30% growth in 2025, its share of total power generation reaching 8.7% \u2013 surpassing wind (8.4%) for the first time and almost equaling nuclear\u2019s share of 8.8%. Wind power was the second largest source of renewables growth, increasing by 8.2% year-on-year. Notably, China\u2019s use of oil and diesel declined for the second year in a row.<\/p>\n

European Union’s Rapid Transition<\/h3>\n

Following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, the EU accelerated its renewable energy plans. By 2025, wind and solar<\/a> made up 30% of electricity supply, compared to 19% in 2021. This displaced both coal and gas, with gas generation falling by 15% and coal by 38% over the same period. Wind and solar generated 852TWh, more than coal, gas and oil combined (760TWh). Ember analysis found that new wind and solar capacity deployed after the invasion avoided \u20ac72bn of fossil fuel imports, with the largest savings in Germany, Spain and Italy.<\/p>\n

Pakistan’s Solar Revolution<\/h3>\n

Pakistan\u2019s behind-the-meter and off-grid solar capacity grew from 2.1GW in 2021 to 23.4GW in 2025. Solar\u2019s share of electricity generation jumped from 3% to 22% in just four years. This rapid transformation, driven by surging power prices and falling solar panel costs, led the government to cancel LNG cargoes scheduled for 2026-2027 and seek to renegotiate long-term contracts.
