Unlike many competitors that rely on radar and lidar sensors alongside cameras, XPENG has adhered to Elon Musk’s argument that cameras alone are sufficient. Larry Evans, who has experienced both Tesla’s V14 FSD and XPENG’s latest self-driving systems, has noted the similarities. CEO He Xiaopeng aims for his company’s self-driving capabilities to outperform Tesla’s in China by August (next month), though quantifying this remains challenging and subject to debate. What is clear is the close alignment in design and capabilities between the two.

European Expansion and the VLA 2.0 System

XPENG is not limiting its ambitions to China. The Guangzhou-headquartered automaker has been actively growing its European presence. Last year, more than half of the company’s sales outside China were in Europe, and it aims to significantly increase that figure by 2026. To stimulate sales, XPENG plans to release its Vision Language Action (VLA) 2.0 self-driving technology in Europe during the second half of this year. The system is designed to eventually offer “minds-off” Level 4 autonomous driving. The company is confident it can compete effectively against Tesla, despite Tesla’s longer and broader footprint in Europe.

Leadership’s Confidence

“We are very confident that we can be head-to-head competitors with Tesla,” said Brian Gu Hongdi, XPENG’s vice-chairman and president, in an interview with the SCMP. He added, “The Chinese market is probably the most competitive and most innovative autonomous driving market in the world. The confidence comes from the fact that we are trained in the most fit gym in the world.”

Shifting from Price to Technology Branding

Earlier in its history, XPENG sought sales by offering vehicles similar to Tesla’s at significantly lower prices. The company now aims to differentiate itself through advanced technology rather than engaging in a “race to the bottom” on pricing. “While most Chinese brands are still viewed as more of an affordability-driven sort of brand, [we] want to position ourselves as a tech-driven brand,” Gu also told the SCMP. This strategic shift reflects the company’s maturation and growing confidence in its autonomous driving capabilities.

Outlook in Europe

What XPENG can achieve in Europe with VLA 2.0 remains to be seen, just as Tesla’s FSD progress in the region is uncertain. However, there is no apparent reason why XPENG cannot compete head-to-head with Tesla. While Tesla benefits from a larger brand and historical reputation in Europe, XPENG’s CEO is not promoting xenophobia, racism, or fascism on the continent. Over the coming years, the market will reveal whether XPENG can capture some of Tesla’s market share or if both brands can grow within an electrifying Europe.

XPENG plans to compete with Tesla in Europe using its camera-only self-driving tech VLA 2.0, aiming for Level 4 autonomy by late 2026.

[1

post-742","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
