California’s Generous EV Incentives for Ride-Hailing Drivers
California has introduced a substantial new incentive program specifically for ride-hailing drivers (often called rideshare drivers) to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). The program, known as the Drivers Assistance Program or RIDE (Rideshare Incentives for Driving Electric), offers up to $20,300 for purchasing or leasing a new ZEV and up to $14,200 for a used ZEV. Additionally, eligible drivers can receive up to $1,170 per year to offset charging costs. This initiative is part of California’s broader effort to reduce transportation emissions and make electric vehicles more accessible for those who spend the most time on the road.
Program Details and Eligibility
The RIDE program is specifically designed for low- and moderate-income drivers who complete a high volume of rides for transportation network companies (TNCs) such as HopSkipDrive, Lyft, and Uber. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) emphasizes that the incentives aim to reduce pollution while helping drivers who may struggle financially. Unlike many other EV incentives, this program targets those who need it most rather than providing additional advantages to the wealthy.
New vs. Used ZEV Incentives
Eligible drivers can receive up to $20,300 for a new zero-emission vehicle or up to $14,200 for a used zero-emission vehicle. These amounts are significantly higher than standard EV incentives, reflecting the higher mileage and greater emissions impact of ride-hailing work.
Charging Cost Support
In addition to purchase incentives, drivers may receive up to $1,170 per year to help offset charging costs. This ongoing support recognizes that ride-hailing drivers drive far more miles than average commuters, making home or public charging a significant expense.

CPUC President John Reynolds stated: “California’s transition to cleaner transportation depends on making electric vehicles more accessible for the people who spend the most time on our roads. These incentives will help reduce the cost of switching to zero-emission vehicles for rideshare drivers that perform the highest volume of rides, thereby reducing pollution and helping California meet its climate goals.” The program is administered by CALSTART, a nonprofit organization focused on clean transportation.
