CleanPeak Energy and Western Sydney International Airport Forge Landmark Renewable Electricity Partnership
CleanPeak Energy has partnered with Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) to deliver 100% renewable electricity to Australia’s newest airport. CleanPeak will invest over $50 million at the site to develop 9 MWp of new rooftop solar and a 120 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Combined with WSI’s existing 4.5 MWp rooftop solar system, CleanPeak will supply more than 18 GWh of on-site renewable electricity annually under a seven-year Electricity Supply Agreement (ESA).
Integrated Energy System Design and Growing Demand
CleanPeak Energy will also manage the airport’s embedded network distribution system, ensuring all tenants and operators receive seamless renewable electricity. WSI’s electricity requirements are expected to grow from around 40 GWh annually today to about 120 GWh within the next 4–5 years. CleanPeak will supply 100% of WSI’s electricity from day one through onsite solar and storage, plus additional supply from CleanPeak’s growing fleet of solar farms.
Designed from the ground up as a greenfield development, Western Sydney International Airport incorporates sustainability at its core. Everything from baggage handling and terminal operations to electric airside equipment, including pushback tractors, will be powered by renewable electricity.

Detailed Components of the Renewable Energy System
CleanPeak commenced supplying renewable electricity to the airport on 1 May 2026. The fully-integrated energy system will incorporate:
- The existing 4.5 MWp rooftop solar installation, to be leased, operated, and maintained by CleanPeak.
- Approximately 9 MWp of additional solar generation: a 4.95 MWp system on the existing cargo terminal rooftop and a further 4 MWp on the second cargo terminal rooftop.
- A 30 MW / 120 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), planned for delivery in 2027, providing stability, resilience, and peak demand management.
- An embedded network for efficient distribution and optimisation of electricity across the airport precinct to both WSI and various tenants.
As demand grows, CleanPeak will add new solar farms to its development portfolio in New South Wales to ensure sufficient renewable generation. Once fully operational, expected demand at the site will exceed 100 GWh per annum, supplied 100% from renewables, avoiding approximately 64,000 tonnes of CO₂-e per annum. This is equivalent to removing roughly 22,500 passenger vehicles from Australian roads or powering more than 16,800 average Australian homes for a year.
Unlike conventional arrangements, CleanPeak will actively manage and optimise all components of the electrical energy system—including generation, storage, and distribution—balancing reliability, cost, and sustainability.
