US Army Unveils Hybrid Electric M1E3 Abrams Tank

The US Army has confirmed that its long-awaited next-generation M1E3 Abrams tank will be a hybrid electric vehicle (EV). The Army has pursued a gradual but persistent path toward an all-electric fleet, despite a sharp U-turn in federal EV policy under President Donald Trump after he took office for the second time last year.

The Abrams Tank’s EV Journey

The Army’s interest in hybrid EVs grew alongside the increasing electronic equipment on combat vehicles. Tactical vehicles often sit idle, and running a conventional engine to power electronics creates a large heat signature and noise, increasing exposure risks. Early hints of electrifying the Abrams tank emerged as early as 2010, with fuel cells among the technologies considered. In 2012, CleanTechnica noted that GM was working on thermoelectric generators for capturing waste heat from car exhaust, and the company partnered with General Dynamics, Creare Inc., and the Research Triangle Institute on the Abrams tank project.

More recently, the Army has installed additional batteries on Abrams tanks to power onboard electronics with the engine off, with future plans to supply off-board equipment and microgrids.

Hybrid Powertrain Plans Confirmed

In 2022, General Dynamics Land Systems announced upgrades for the next Abrams and Stryker vehicles, including hybrid powerplants. The motivation includes reducing fuel consumption and logistical challenges, alongside the Pentagon’s climate goals. However, climate goals receded from federal policy after Trump’s second term began in 2025. The urgency to move beyond 20th-century energy technologies increased due to drone-centered warfare.

In January 2025, the Army displayed the M1E3 Abrams early prototype at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. An Army press release described the tank as combining “advanced protection, reduced weight, and significantly lower fuel consumption to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s battlefield.”

In May 2025, Army Recognition’s Chief Editor Alain Servaes confirmed that the M1E3 includes plans for a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system with a high-efficiency transmission. This hybrid architecture is expected to reduce fuel consumption, extend range, lower thermal and acoustic signatures, and provide additional electrical power for future sensors, protection systems, directed-energy weapons, and electronic warfare. The Army aims to create a lighter, more survivable tank against loitering munitions, FPV drones, long-range precision fires, and persistent aerial surveillance.

Light Tactical Vehicles Also Going Hybrid

While full electric propulsion for a main battle tank is not yet viable, lighter tactical vehicles can fully adopt hybrid technology. In January 2022, Oshkosh Defense unveiled the eJLTV, offering silent drive, extended silent watch, improved fuel economy, and increased exportable power. In a Military Times article from last week (mid-2025), reporter Jared Keller noted the uncertain fate of the JLTV but highlighted other hybrid tactical vehicles, including GM Defense’s ISV-H, described as a “stealthy electric Trojan horse that happens to carry soldiers.”

Hybrid Architecture for Laser Weaponry

The need for burst energy to power laser weapons is a key driver. Keller explained that a hybrid architecture with a generator for average load and a high-voltage battery for instantaneous surges provides a smaller, quieter, and more tactically versatile solution. Such a vehicle becomes a node in a distributed battlefield power grid, capable of charging drone batteries, running command and control networks, and powering electronic warfare—and delivering energy to laser weapons when needed.

GM Defense’s data sheet for the ISV-H hybrid emphasizes that it uses existing JP8 fuel infrastructure, so no EV charging station is required. The hybrid system provides energy on demand, replaces existing generators, saves fuel, and reduces maintenance due to fewer moving parts. The ISV-H is based on GM’s ZR2 variant of the Chevy Silverado HD 3500. A separate hybrid fuel cell EV version (the ZH2) was revealed in 2018, but its future remains uncertain.
