Forget the Fiat Topolino EV, which costs $13,995 and is basically a golf cart limited to roads with speed limits under 35 mph. VinFast has unveiled a far more compelling alternative: the VinFast VF2 city car, priced at just VND 188 million (approximately $7,150). While not currently offered in the United States, the VF2 represents a significant step toward affordable electric mobility for emerging markets.
Vehicle Specifications and Features
The VF2 is a two-door, four-seat city car slightly larger than a Smart Fortwo, with dimensions of 3,090 mm in length, 1,496 mm in width, 1,663 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,065 mm. It is designed as a safe, comfortable alternative to two-wheeled vehicles, improving urban life quality.
Powertrain and Range
Despite its small size and top speed of 50 mph, the VF2 offers 130 miles of range on a full charge—more than double the Fiat Topolino’s 50-mile range. It also features fast charging capability, going from 10% to 70% in 34 minutes. The motor delivers 40 hp and 47 lb-ft of torque.
Basic Amenities and Safety
Keeping costs low, the VF2 includes a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a 4-way adjustable driver’s seat, air conditioning, two speakers, FM radio, ABS, traction control, electric brake distribution, and a driver’s side airbag. It lacks the extra tech and expenses of most modern cars.
Market Position and Future Prospects
VinFast, a state-backed automaker with deep cash reserves, aims to provide affordable electric mobility for all. The VF2, with its no-frills design and rock-bottom price, could see strong demand in Asian, African, and South American markets. While its US availability is unlikely, it underscores the global push for economical EVs.
