Introducing the MONA L03: A New Contender
The XPENG MONA L03 has recently entered presale, and it may be the closest competitor yet to the base RWD Model Y. Despite being positioned a class below XPENG’s own G6, the L03 fits more of the premium Tesla’s profile. Over the years, many models have been touted as the next ‘Model Y killer,’ typically by offering more size, power, range, luxury, and technology. However, the MONA L03 takes a different approach—offering a bit more in some areas and a bit less in others, without trying to be more in every way.
A Detailed Comparison with the Model Y
Dimensions and Weight
The MONA L03 is 4650 mm long, shorter than a Model Y (4794 mm) and slightly longer than a RAV4 (4600 mm). Other measurements are essentially the same as the Y. The curb weight starts at 1,855 kg, making it a little lighter than the Model Y.
Handling and Performance
The L03’s 5.25 m turning radius is tighter than the Model Y’s roughly 6 m. Both have independent suspensions and rear-wheel drive. However, all versions of the L03 come with adaptive dampers, whereas the Model Y offers this only on the Performance trim. With lighter weight, shorter overhangs, and greater maneuverability, the Mona should handle well—potentially better than the base trim Y.
The L03 uses an 183-kW motor and accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds. That is 0.7 seconds slower than the base RWD Model Y in China, but 0.4 seconds faster than the base config in the US or Europe (0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds). The power rating is slightly lower on paper, but performance is effectively comparable.
Range and Charging
The L03 offers ranges of 525 km or 625 km (CLTC). The base Model Y in China sits between at 593 km. Charging from 10-80% takes 18 minutes, which is faster than the Model Y’s 25 minutes, though not as quick as the latest flash-charging models from other manufacturers.
Interior and Cargo
The MONA L03 provides a little more rear seat legroom but claims less cargo space. Tesla uses non-standard measurements (up to the roof) while the industry standard is up to seatbacks, so the difference is not as large as official numbers suggest. XPENG offsets smaller volume with greater utility: 8 magnetic mounting points, 5 threaded mounting points, peg boards in the rear, a cargo drawer under the rear seat, and 37 other storage locations. So cargo usability is comparable.
Up front, the L03 has a few more physical controls for the driver around the steering wheel compared to the Model Y, and the glove box can be opened without the touchscreen. However, it has far fewer physical controls than premium XPENG models or many competitors. A 26.8-inch W-HUD provides driver information, but there are not many screens. XPENG’s voice assistant is powerful and reduces visual clutter.
72% of interior surfaces are soft touch. XPENG describes the interior quality as ‘a class above.’ Many of the twenty speakers sit behind metal grilles. The front seats offer heating, ventilation, and 14-point massage, and can recline to a zero-gravity position. The design is more interesting than the Model Y but still restrained and minimalist. Powered attachment points allow adding screens to the front seatbacks for rear passengers.
Noise and Build Quality
The L03 has 5mm thick tempered glass in the side windows (not laminated like the Tesla). Combined with active noise cancelling, the L03 claims 2-3 decibels lower interior noise than the Model Y while driving—a significant reduction.
Exterior Design and Aerodynamics
The exterior was designed by former Ferrari designer JuanMa López, who previously designed the Purosangue. Compared to the Model Y, the L03 is more sculpted but not over the top. Its lighting signature is more sophisticated. Versions with 20-inch wheels feature yellow fixed calipers for a sportier look. The drag coefficient is 0.228, comparable to the Model Y’s 0.22 and better than the Ferrari Luce’s 0.254. Panel gaps are between 3.25 and 3.5 mm, tighter and more consistent than current Model Ys.
Intelligent Driving and Safety
The L03 comes standard with 750 TOPS of computing power, with top specs offering 1500 TOPS—more than HW4. It has a dozen ultrasonic sensors. Both intelligent driving systems are vision-based (no LiDAR). VLA 2.0 tends to be smoother and more capable in dense urban areas, and is the most comparable system to FSD among competitors. The car achieves 5 stars across ANCAP, CNCAP, and Euro NCAP safety testing. XPENG plans to launch the L03 in 64 markets with its intelligent driving capabilities.
Pricing and Value
The MONA L03 starts at 142,800 RMB ($21,018 USD) for the 525 Max trim, rising to 152,800 RMB ($22,490) for the 625 Max. The Ultra SE trim adds 1500 TOPS, priced from 155,800 RMB ($22,931) for the 525 Ultra SE to 165,800 RMB ($24,403) for the 625 Ultra SE. These are presale prices; final prices in China tend to be slightly lower. By contrast, the base RWD Model Y with 593 km range and Tesla Driver Assist costs 327,500 RMB ($48,203)—over twice as much for a comparable vehicle.
There is also an EREV version starting at 149,800 RMB ($22,019) in Max trim up to 161,800 RMB ($23,815) in Ultra SE trim. It offers 315 km of WLTP battery range—enough for daily commuting—plus 1015 km of additional range from a gasoline range extender. This could be the closest vehicle to a Model Y in EREV form.
Conclusion: Less Is More?
In several areas, the L03 is a bit better than the base Model Y: better maneuverability, faster charging, refined interior, better noise reduction, and tighter build quality. Yet it is not trying to be more of a vehicle—it’s smaller, lighter, and less powerful on paper. This approach may make it more compelling than competitors that pile on extras. The MONA L03 could be the best competitor to the Model Y in spirit, although we have yet to drive it to confirm. By not trying to be more, the MONA L03 may become a more attractive option for many customers.
